19 Apr Switching Off: Why Your Business Needs You to Enjoy the Weekend
It’s Saturday morning. You’ve got a fresh cup of coffee in one hand and, almost instinctively, your phone in the other. Before you’ve even had a bite of toast, you’re scrolling through emails, checking your bank balance, or nervously glancing at a spreadsheet you didn't quite finish on Friday afternoon. Sound familiar?
If you run a small business or work in a creative trade, the "always-on" culture isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. But here’s the cold, hard truth: your business doesn’t actually want you to work 24/7. In fact, your business is probably begging you to put the phone down, step away from the laptop, and actually enjoy your weekend.
At Harrison's Accountancy, we spend our week looking at numbers, tax returns, and management accounts. We see firsthand the passion that goes into running an SME. But we also see the fatigue. Today, let's talk about why switching off is the best executive decision you can make this week.
The Myth of the 24/7 Hustle
Are you actually being productive, or just busy?
We’ve been sold a lie that the only way to succeed is to "out-hustle" everyone else. We’re told that if we aren’t working while others are sleeping (or enjoying a Sunday roast), we’re falling behind. But there is a massive difference between activity and achievement.
When you work without a break, your brain starts to lose its edge. You become slower at making decisions, more prone to making errors in your bookkeeping, and: perhaps most importantly: you lose your creative spark. For creatives and entrepreneurs, that spark is the engine of the entire business. If the engine is overheated, it’s eventually going to seize up.
Think of your brain like a battery. Every decision you make, from choosing a font to approving an invoice, drains a little bit of that power. By Friday evening, most of us are running on 5%. If you don't plug yourself into the "weekend charger," you’re starting Monday morning on 2%. That’s not a recipe for growth; it’s a recipe for a breakdown.

The Science of the "Aha!" Moment
Why your best ideas never happen at your desk.
Have you ever noticed that your best ideas come to you in the shower, while walking the dog, or halfway through a Saturday afternoon film? There’s a scientific reason for that.
When you’re focused intensely on a task (like your self-assessment), your brain is in "focused mode." It’s great for getting things done, but it’s terrible for "big picture" thinking. When you relax and let your mind wander, you enter "diffuse mode." This is where your brain connects dots it couldn’t see before.
By switching off over the weekend, you’re giving your subconscious permission to solve the problems you’ve been banging your head against all week. You aren't "doing nothing"; you're giving your brain the space it needs to innovate. If you never switch off, you never give those breakthrough ideas a chance to surface.
Protecting Your Most Valuable Asset: You
Your business is built on your health and sanity.
If a vital piece of machinery in a factory was vibrating and smoking, the owner wouldn't say, "Just keep it running for another 48 hours and see what happens." They’d shut it down immediately for maintenance.
As a small business owner or a freelancer, you are the most vital piece of machinery. Burnout isn't just "being a bit tired." It’s a state of physical and emotional exhaustion that can take months or even years to recover from.
Burnout leads to:
- Irritability with clients and staff.
- Lack of motivation.
- Physical health issues.
- Poor financial decision-making.
Taking the weekend off is your "preventative maintenance." It’s much cheaper and easier to take two days off now than to be forced to take two months off later because you’ve hit a wall.

How to Actually Switch Off (The Practical Bit)
It’s easier said than done, but here’s how to start.
We know, we know. "Just relax" is easier said than done when you have a mountain of tasks. But like anything in business, switching off requires a strategy.
- The Friday "Brain Dump": Before you close your laptop on Friday, write down every single thing that’s worrying you or needs doing next week. Once it’s on paper (or in your project management tool), your brain doesn't have to use energy "holding" onto it.
- Turn Off Notifications: This is the big one. If your work emails pop up on your phone, you are never truly away from the office. Go into your settings and disable work-related notifications from Friday evening until Monday morning. The world will not end in 48 hours.
- Physical Boundaries: If you work from home, close the door to your office. If you work at the kitchen table, pack your laptop away in a drawer. If you can't see it, you're less likely to "just check one thing."
- Schedule Fun: If you find it hard to do "nothing," schedule something. Book a table for lunch, go for a long hike, or visit a gallery. Give your brain a new "task" that has nothing to do with turnover or taxes.
Why We Practice What We Preach
The Harrison's Accountancy approach.
At Harrison's Accountancy, we love what we do. We’re passionate about helping businesses grow, whether that’s through company formation or complex tax planning. But we also know that we provide the best service when we’re refreshed and sharp.
That’s why our office closes over the weekend. We want our team to spend time with their families, enjoy their hobbies, and get some sun (weather permitting, this is the UK after all!). It means that when Monday morning rolls around, we’re ready to dive into your accounts with 100% focus.
We want the same for you. Your spreadsheets will still be there on Monday. Your emails will still be in your inbox. But you? You’ll be a version of yourself that is happier, healthier, and much better at running a business.

A Note for the Perfectionists
It’s okay to let go.
A lot of entrepreneurs feel a sense of guilt when they aren't working. You might feel like you’re letting your clients down or that you aren't "serious" enough about your goals.
Flip that perspective. Taking a break is a sign of a mature business owner. It shows you have systems in place (or are building them) that don't require your manual intervention every single second. It shows you value your longevity over a short-term sprint.
If you’re struggling to step away because your accountancy services or admin are a mess, that’s where we come in. Our goal is to take the stress of the numbers off your plate so that you can enjoy your time off without that nagging feeling in the back of your mind.
Enjoy Your Weekend!
See you on Monday.
So, consider this your official permission slip. Whatever it is you enjoy doing: whether it’s gardening, DIY, playing with the kids, or just binge-watching a new series: go do it.
The Harrison's Accountancy office is now closed for the weekend. We’re off to recharge our batteries and forget about tax codes for a couple of days. We suggest you do the same.
We’ll be back at our desks, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, on Monday morning. If you need us then, you know where we are. But for now?
Switch off. Relax. You’ve earned it.
