P11D Deadline Reminder: Don’t Miss the 6 July Filing Date

P11D Deadline Reminder: Don’t Miss the 6 July Filing Date

Tick-tock. With exactly 10 days to go until the 6 July deadline, it is time to make sure your P11D forms are in order.

If you are a director of a limited company or an employer providing perks to your team, this date should be circled in red on your calendar. Missing it isn’t just a headache; it can be a costly mistake. As your local small business accountant, we want to make sure you stay on the right side of HMRC without the last-minute panic.

Whether you are a seasoned business owner or an accountant for contractors, keeping track of "Benefits in Kind" is a crucial part of your annual tax cycle. Let’s break down exactly what you need to do before the clock strikes midnight on 6 July.

What is a P11D, anyway?

The P11D is the form used to report "Benefits in Kind" (perks) that you or your employees received throughout the tax year.

Essentially, if your company pays for something that benefits an individual personally: and it isn't included in their regular salary: HMRC needs to know about it. Because these benefits have a financial value, they are often subject to tax and National Insurance.

Common examples of Benefits in Kind include:

  • Company cars and fuel: Even if used for business, the personal element is taxable.
  • Private medical insurance: One of the most common perks reported on a P11D.
  • Interest-free or low-interest loans: Often used for season tickets or director loans.
  • Assets provided for personal use: Such as a laptop that is used primarily for non-work activities.
  • Professional fees or subscriptions: If they aren't directly related to the business.

If you are unsure whether a specific expense counts as a benefit, it’s always worth checking with a professional payroll accountant to avoid under-reporting.

The 6 July Filing Deadline: No Exceptions

The deadline for filing your P11D and P11D(b) forms for the 2025/26 tax year is 6 July 2026.

It is important to note that HMRC no longer accepts paper P11D forms. Everything must be submitted electronically. This is where using a dedicated payroll bureau service can save you significant time and stress.

By 6 July, you must also provide each relevant employee with a copy of their P11D information. This allows them to update their own records and ensures their Self-Assessment tax returns are accurate.

Don't Forget the Payment Deadline: 22 July

While the forms are due on the 6th, the bill for Class 1A National Insurance must be paid by 22 July.

If you are paying HMRC electronically (which is the recommended and most common method), you have until 22 July 2026 to clear the balance. If you are still using older methods like paying by cheque or post, your deadline is earlier: 19 July 2026.

Class 1A National Insurance is paid by the employer (the company) on the value of the benefits provided. It doesn't come out of the employee’s pocket, but it is a necessary cost of providing those extra perks.

The Cost of Being Late: HMRC Penalties

HMRC is not known for its leniency when it comes to late filings: and P11D penalties can stack up quickly.

If you miss the 6 July filing deadline for your P11D(b), you could face an initial penalty of £100 per 50 employees for each month (or part-month) that the form is late. If you also fail to pay the Class 1A NIC on time, HMRC will charge interest on the outstanding balance, and additional percentage-based penalties can apply if the delay continues.

For a small business or a contractor, these fines are an unnecessary drain on resources. A proactive approach to your bookkeeping and accounts ensures these dates never sneak up on you.
