13 Jul Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is Here , What Does It Actually Mean for You?
It’s finally here. After years of announcements, delays, and pilot schemes, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) is officially live.
As of today, Friday, 26 June 2026, many of you are already a few months into the new tax year, and the first major milestone is looming on the horizon. For some, this change feels like a mountain to climb. For others, it’s just another digital shift in an increasingly paperless world.
At Harrison’s Accountancy, we know that tax changes can be a source of real anxiety. Whether you are a sole trader accountant seeker or a landlord managing a property portfolio, our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible. We want to take the "tax stress" off your plate so you can focus on what you do best: running your business.
So, let's break down exactly what MTD for Income Tax means for you, who needs to act right now, and why that date in August is so important.
What is MTD for ITSA anyway?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s plan to move the UK’s tax system into the modern age.
In the old days (well, until very recently), most sole traders and landlords would gather their receipts once a year, usually in a panic around January, and submit one big Self Assessment return. MTD for Income Tax replaces that annual scramble with a more frequent, digital-first approach.
The core requirements are:
- Digital Record Keeping: You must keep your business records in a digital format (no more shoeboxes of physical receipts!).
- Quarterly Updates: You need to send a summary of your income and expenses to HMRC every three months.
- A Final Declaration: At the end of the tax year, you’ll submit a final statement to pull everything together, including any adjustments or reliefs.
While it sounds like more work, the reality is that it gives you a much clearer picture of your finances throughout the year. No more guessing how much tax you owe until the following January; with the right xero accountant by your side, you'll know your position in real-time.
Who is affected right now?
As of April 2026, the first wave of sole traders and landlords have officially joined the MTD fold.

If you are a self-employed individual or a landlord with a total "qualifying income" of over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year, you are in scope right now.
It is important to remember that this threshold applies to your gross income (before expenses) and it is cumulative. If you earn £40,000 from your consulting business and £15,000 from a rental property, your total qualifying income is £55,000: meaning you are officially part of the MTD club.
Not over £50,000? All is not lost!
If your income is between £30,000 and £50,000, you have a little more breathing room. You won’t be mandated into the system until April 2027. However, many of our clients are choosing to switch early. Why? Because getting your systems ready now avoids the rush next year and allows you to benefit from the efficiency of digital bookkeeping sooner.
The Big Date: 7 August 2026
Your first quarterly update deadline is just around the corner.

Because the MTD year started on 6 April 2026, the first "quarter" runs from 6 April to 5 July. HMRC gives you one month from the end of the quarter to submit your update.
The deadline for your first MTD for ITSA submission is 7 August 2026.
This update isn't a full tax return. You don’t need to worry about complex accounting adjustments, capital allowances, or tax reliefs at this stage. It is simply a digital summary of your income and expenses for that three-month period.
If you are worried about penalties, there is a bit of good news. HMRC has introduced a "soft landing" for the 2026/27 tax year. While you should absolutely aim to meet every deadline, late-submission penalty points won't be issued for quarterly updates during this first year. However, don't let this make you complacent: staying on top of your records is the only way to ensure you don't get caught out later.
How Quarterly Updates Change Your Workflow
Moving from an annual task to a quarterly habit.
If you’ve been used to the "January Jitters," this shift will actually feel like a relief once you get into the rhythm. Instead of a week-long audit of your own bank statements once a year, you’ll spend a few minutes each month (or week) ensuring your digital records are up to date.
As a dedicated accountant for freelancers, we recommend a simple workflow:
- Snap as you go: Use an app to photograph receipts the moment you get them.
- Bank Feeds: Ensure your business bank account is linked to your accounting software.
- Review Monthly: Spend 15 minutes at the end of each month checking that everything is categorised correctly.
By the time the 7th of August, November, February, and May roll around, your quarterly update will be little more than a "click of a button" (provided everything is in order).
Why Xero is Your Best Friend in This New Era
You cannot use the old HMRC portal for MTD updates: you need compatible software.

This is the biggest hurdle for many: you can no longer simply log in to the HMRC website and type in your figures. You must use "functional compatible software" that can talk directly to HMRC’s systems via an API.
This is where being a Xero Accountant comes in handy. Harrison’s Accountancy is a Platinum Champion Xero Partner, which means we live and breathe this software. We believe Xero is the absolute best tool for MTD because:
- It’s User-Friendly: You don’t need to be a math whiz to use it.
- Real-Time Data: You can see exactly how much you've earned and what your estimated tax bill looks like at any given moment.
- Automation: It does the heavy lifting for you, from pulling in bank transactions to reminding you of deadlines.
If you are still using spreadsheets, now is the time to make the jump. While "bridging software" exists to link spreadsheets to HMRC, it’s often a clunky sticking plaster. A full cloud solution like Xero offers so much more value to your business beyond just tax compliance.
