10 Mar Helping Our Locals Stay Safe: Our CFR Kit Donation for Biggleswade, Potton & Sandy
At Harrison’s Accountancy, we’ve always believed that being a local business is about more than just balancing books and filing tax returns. It’s about being an active part of the community that supports us. That’s why we're so incredibly proud to share some news that is very close to our hearts.
We have officially donated a full Community First Responder (CFR) kit to the Biggleswade, Potton, and Sandy Community First Responders.
If you’ve lived in our corner of Bedfordshire for any length of time, you’ve likely seen these amazing volunteers in action. They are the unsung heroes who drop everything at a moment’s notice to help their neighbours during their most vulnerable moments. Supporting them isn’t just a "nice to do": for us, it felt like a responsibility.
Who are the Community First Responders?
They are local volunteers trained by the ambulance service to provide life-saving care in the minutes before a paramedic arrives.
When an emergency call goes out: whether it’s a cardiac arrest, a stroke, or a serious fall: every second counts. In rural areas and busy market towns like Biggleswade, Sandy, and Potton, traffic or distance can sometimes mean an ambulance takes a few extra minutes to arrive. That’s where the CFRs come in.
These volunteers live and work right here in our community. Because they are already "on the ground," they can often reach a patient significantly faster than a traditional ambulance dispatched from a central hub. They aren't just medical responders; they are our neighbours, our friends, and in some cases, our clients.

Why we decided to step up
We believe that local businesses have a duty to reinvest in the safety and well-being of the people they serve.
As accountants here at Harrison's Accountancy, we spend a lot of time looking at numbers. But those numbers represent people, families, and local livelihoods. When we heard about the funding needs of the Biggleswade, Potton, and Sandy CFR group, it was a "no-brainer."
These volunteers give their time for free, but the equipment they use is far from cheap. From the batteries that power defibrillators to the specialised monitoring gear used, the costs add up quickly. By donating a full kit, we wanted to ensure that at least one more responder is fully equipped to head out the door and save a life the moment their phone pings.
What goes into a CFR Kit?
It’s not just a bag of bandages; it’s a mobile life-support station that costs thousands of pounds to maintain.
Many people are surprised to learn that CFR groups are largely self-funded. While they work alongside the East of England Ambulance Service, they often rely on donations to purchase their own gear. Here are just a few things our donation helps cover:
- Defibrillator Batteries and Pads: A "defib" is useless if it doesn't have power. These batteries are specialised and need regular replacement to ensure they work the first time, every time.
- Phone Licences: Communication is everything. Responders need secure, reliable software on their devices to receive emergency alerts and navigate to incidents instantly.
- Oxygen and Diagnostic Tools: Every kit includes oxygen cylinders, pulse oximeters, and blood pressure monitors to help the responder assess the patient accurately before the ambulance arrives.
Knowing that we’ve helped put this equipment into the hands of someone who knows how to use it is a massive honour for the whole team here at Harrison’s.

Supporting Biggleswade, Sandy, and Potton
Our local towns are growing, and our community services need to grow with them.
We love where we work. Whether we are helping a new startup with company formation services or chatting with a long-term client about why Biggleswade small businesses are moving to the cloud, the sense of community is always there.
Biggleswade, Potton, and Sandy have a unique charm, but they also face the challenges of any expanding area. As more houses are built and more people move to the region, the pressure on emergency services increases. By supporting the CFRs, we are helping to create a safety net that catches people when they need it most.
It’s the same philosophy we apply to our work. We want to be the "first responders" for your business finances: there when you need us, offering clear advice, and making sure everything is running smoothly. Whether it's sorting out your self-assessment or managing your annual accounts, we’re here to support the local economy just as the CFRs support our local health.
A Massive Thank You to the Team
To the volunteers: we see you, we appreciate you, and we thank you.
It takes a special kind of person to volunteer for this role. You have to be prepared to walk into high-stress situations, stay calm under pressure, and offer comfort to people on what might be the worst day of their lives.
To the whole team at the Biggleswade, Potton, and Sandy Community First Responders: thank you. Thank you for the late nights, the interrupted dinners, and the unwavering commitment to keeping our community safe. We are genuinely humbled to be able to support the work you do.

How you can help too
You don’t have to be an accountant or a business owner to make a difference.
The CFRs are always looking for more support. If you’re a local business owner and you’ve had a good year, perhaps you could look into sponsoring a piece of equipment? If you’re an individual, even a small donation towards defib pads or training materials makes a difference.
And if you’re looking for a way to give back personally, they are always looking for new volunteers. It’s a big commitment, but as any of the team will tell you, the feeling of knowing you’ve helped save a life is worth every second.
If you want to learn more about their work or find out how you can donate, I’d encourage you to look them up on social media or visit their community pages. Every £1 helps keep those kits stocked and those responders ready.
Final thoughts from Dan
Running Harrison’s Accountancy gives me a unique view of our community. I see the hard work our clients put in every day, and I see the vibrant spirit of Biggleswade and the surrounding villages.
We’ve been very lucky to grow our firm here, and we’ve only been able to do that because of the support of our local clients. If you want to see what some of them have to say about working with us, you can check out our testimonials. It’s that trust that allows us to give back to causes like the Community First Responders.
So, next time you see a CFR responder in their high-vis jacket, give them a wave (if they aren't busy!). They are a vital part of what makes this area a great place to live and work.
We’re proud to be in your corner, and we’re proud to be in theirs.
Stay safe out there!
