09 Mar April Prep Matters: 5 Financial Deadlines Every Bedfordshire Business Owner Needs to Know
Is it just me, or does March always feel like the fastest month of the year? One minute we’re shaking off the winter chill, and the next, the "New Year" is staring us in the face. No, I’m not talking about fireworks and resolutions: I’m talking about the UK tax year.
For business owners here in Biggleswade and across Bedfordshire, April isn't just about the start of spring; it’s the busiest intersection of the financial calendar. Between the 2025/26 tax year wrapping up and the 2026/27 year kicking off, there is a lot to juggle. This year, in particular, we’ve got some big shifts in National Minimum Wage and the long-awaited arrival of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA).
I’m Dan Harrison, and at Harrison’s Accountancy, we’re all about making the complex stuff simple. You didn't start your business to spend your weekends staring at spreadsheets and HMRC manuals. So, I’ve pulled together this guide to the five most critical deadlines you need to hit this April to keep your business on track and your stress levels low.
1. April 1st: The National Minimum Wage Shift
Are you ready for the mandatory pay increases for your team?
April 1st marks the start of the financial year for many, but for anyone with a payroll, it’s the day the National Minimum Wage (NMW) and National Living Wage (NLW) rates officially change.
HMRC is particularly strict about this. Even if your payroll run doesn't happen until the end of the month, the new rates apply to any work done on or after April 1st. If you have younger staff or apprentices, pay close attention to the age brackets, as they often shift alongside the rates.
What you need to do:
- Audit your payroll: Double-check the ages of all your employees. If someone had a birthday recently, they might have moved into a higher pay bracket.
- Update your software: Ensure your payroll software is updated with the 2026 rates.
- Communicate: If you’re a local Bedfordshire employer, it’s always good practice to have a quick chat with staff about their pay increases. It’s a bit of good news for them, after all!
2. April 5th: The "Use It or Lose It" Deadline
Is your personal wealth working as hard as your business is?
Midnight on April 5th is the hard stop for the 2025/26 tax year. This is the final moment to take advantage of your personal allowances before they reset. If you don't use them, they are gone forever.
Dividend Allowances
The dividend allowance has seen some significant changes over the last few years. If you’re a director of a limited company in Biggleswade, you likely take a portion of your income via dividends. For the 2025/26 year, ensure you have declared and paid any dividends you intended to take within the current allowance threshold. If you’re unsure if you’ve maximized this, give us a shout: it’s better to check now than regret it on April 6th.
ISA Limits
The £20,000 ISA limit is another "use it or lose it" opportunity. Whether it’s a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares ISA, getting your funds in before the deadline is a tax-efficient way to save for the future. Don't forget Junior ISAs for the kids, too!

3. April 6th: The Dawn of MTD for ITSA
The biggest change to tax reporting in decades officially begins today.
This is a big one. As of today, April 6th, 2026, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD for ITSA) is officially live for many sole traders and landlords. If your qualifying income is above the £50,000 threshold, the way you report to HMRC has changed forever.
No more filing one single tax return at the end of the year. Instead, you’ll be required to keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software.
Why this matters for Bedfordshire businesses:
If you’ve been sticking to paper records or a dusty old Excel sheet, now is the time to transition to a cloud-based system like Xero or QuickBooks. It might feel like a hurdle, but in the long run, it gives you a much clearer picture of your cash flow. We’ve been helping local businesses make this transition for a while now, so if you're feeling overwhelmed, we can help you get the right accountancy updates and tools in place.
4. April 19th: The Final PAYE/CIS Submission
Is your year-end payroll reporting accurate and submitted?
If you employ people or work within the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), April 19th is a date you can’t afford to miss. This is the deadline for your final submissions for the 2025/26 tax year.
This isn't just a regular monthly submission. You need to ensure that your Full Payment Submission (FPS) or Employer Payment Summary (EPS) correctly reflects the total pay and deductions for the entire year. For those in the construction trade around Bedford and Biggleswade, ensuring your CIS returns are spot on is vital to avoid nasty penalties from HMRC.
Pro Tip: This is also the time to start thinking about P60s. You have until May 31st to give these to your employees, but getting them sorted now while the year-end is fresh in your mind is a great way to stay ahead of the curve.

5. April 22nd: The Electronic Payment Deadline
Has the money actually left your account?
You’ve done the paperwork, you’ve calculated the figures, but the job isn't done until the money reaches HMRC. April 22nd is the deadline for making electronic payments for PAYE, NICs, and CIS for the final month of the old tax year.
Remember, if you still pay by cheque (which I wouldn't recommend!), your deadline is actually earlier: April 19th.
Why the 22nd matters:
HMRC is not known for its leniency when it comes to late payments. Even if you’re just a day late, you can trigger automatic penalties. My advice? Set up a direct debit or make the payment a few days early. Banking holidays can sometimes interfere with transfer times, so don't leave it until 11:59 PM on the 22nd!
Your 2025/26 Expense Prep Checklist
Before we move fully into the 2026/27 tax year, you need to tidy up the one that’s just ending. Here is a quick checklist for our local business owners to ensure your expenses are in order:
- Clear the glovebox: If you’ve been tucking fuel receipts or parking tickets into your car’s side pocket, get them out now.
- Digitalise everything: Use an app like Dext or the Xero mobile app to snap photos of any paper receipts before they fade.
- Check your home office: If you work from home in Bedfordshire, make sure you’ve calculated your "use of home" expenses. It’s a legitimate deduction that many people forget.
- Reconcile your bank: Ensure every transaction on your business bank account has a corresponding entry in your accounting software.
- Review your mileage: If you use a personal vehicle for business trips (maybe visiting clients in Sandy or St Neots), make sure your mileage log is up to date. The 45p per mile (for the first 10,000 miles) adds up quickly!

Looking Ahead: A Friendly Word of Advice
April can feel like a mountain to climb, but it’s also an opportunity. It’s a chance to look back at what your business achieved in the last year and set some serious goals for the one ahead.
Whether you are a sole trader in Bedford or running a growing limited company in Biggleswade, staying on top of these deadlines is the best way to protect your profit and your peace of mind. Tax shouldn't be a "once a year" panic; it should be a part of your ongoing business strategy.
If you’re feeling a bit lost with the new MTD for ITSA rules, or if you just want to make sure you haven't missed any tax-saving opportunities for the year-end, we’re here to help. At Harrison’s Accountancy, we pride ourselves on being more than just "bean counters": we’re your partners in growth.
