5 Bedfordshire Business Events Worth Knowing About This Summer

5 Bedfordshire Business Events Worth Knowing About This Summer

As the days get longer and the Bedfordshire countryside starts looking its best, it’s easy to let the "business" side of things slide in favour of a cold drink in a pub garden. But at Harrison's Accountancy, we know that summer is actually one of the best times to grow your local network.

There’s a different energy in the air when the sun is out. People are more relaxed, conversations flow a little easier, and the local business community really comes alive. Whether you are a sole trader in Biggleswade or running a larger firm in Bedford, getting out from behind your desk this summer could be the best investment you make all year.

We’ve scoured the local calendars to bring you five key events and networking opportunities happening across Bedfordshire this summer 2026. From high-glamour awards nights to casual riverside chats, there is something for everyone.

1. The SME Bedfordshire Business Awards 2026

When: Thursday, 18 June 2026 | 6:30 pm – 11:00 pm
Where: The Marquee Bedford, Ampthill Road, Kempston Hardwick

If you only attend one "big" event this summer, make it this one. The SME Bedfordshire Business Awards is the highlight of the local corporate calendar. It’s a night designed to celebrate the hard work, innovation, and resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises across our county.

Held at the impressive Marquee in Bedford, this is a black-tie affair. It’s a fantastic opportunity to "dress to impress" and celebrate with your team. Even if you haven't entered the awards yourself this year, attending the gala dinner is a brilliant way to rub shoulders with the most successful business owners in the region.

Why attend?
Beyond the champagne and the three-course meal, the networking potential here is massive. You’ll be in a room full of winners, finalists, and community leaders. It’s a great place to build high-level connections and see what other local firms are doing to stay ahead of the curve.

2. The Athena Network – Bedford Monthly Meetings

When: 10 June 2026 & 8 July 2026 | 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Where: Various locations around Bedford

For the female entrepreneurs and professionals in our community, The Athena Network offers a structured but incredibly supportive environment. Their monthly meetings continue right through the summer, providing a consistent anchor for your networking efforts.

These isn't just a "coffee and a chat" session. Athena is known for its strategic approach to networking, helping members build real partnerships and referral chains. The June and July meetings are perfect for keeping your momentum going while others might be taking their foot off the gas for the holidays.

Why attend?
If you prefer a more focused, relational style of networking over a large, noisy room, this is for you. It’s about building long-term trust. If you’re looking to grow your business through quality recommendations, checking out our accountancy services and then heading to an Athena meeting to talk about your growth plans is a winning combination.

3. Multi-Region Cappuccino Connections

When: 25 June 2026 & 23 July 2026 | 10:00 am – 11:30 am
Where: Online and local venues (check latest listings)

Sometimes you don't have three hours for a full lunch or an entire evening for a gala. That’s where Cappuccino Connections comes in. These sessions are designed to be informal, fast-paced, and highly effective.

Run by the Athena Network but often open to visitors, these sessions attract a wide range of business owners from across Bedfordshire and the surrounding regions. Because they start mid-morning, they don't disrupt your entire working day, making them a favourite for busy directors and freelancers alike.

Why attend?
It’s the "low pressure" option. If you’re new to networking, this is a great way to dip your toe in the water. You can have several meaningful 1-to-1 conversations in the space of 90 minutes.

4. South Bedfordshire Business Networking

When: 23 June 2026 & 28 July 2026 | 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Where: Locations across South Bedfordshire

While Bedford gets a lot of the spotlight, the business community in the south of the county is incredibly vibrant. These sessions are specifically targeted at those operating in and around Luton, Dunstable, and the surrounding villages.

The summer sessions often take advantage of the weather, sometimes held in venues with outdoor spaces that make the midday heat much more manageable. The focus here is on local growth and supporting the South Beds economy.

Why attend?
Localised networking is often the most profitable. If your target market is specifically other businesses in the southern part of the county, these are the dates to mark in your diary.

5. The Bedford River Festival 2026

When: 18 – 19 July 2026
Where: The Embankment and Russell Park, Bedford

Now, we know what you’re thinking: "Isn't the River Festival just for fun?" While it’s definitely one of the biggest community events in the UK, from a business perspective, it is a massive opportunity.

With hundreds of thousands of people descending on the Bedford Embankment, the "networking" here is of a different kind. Many local businesses take stalls, sponsor events, or host hospitality areas. It is the ultimate local branding exercise.

Why attend?
Even if you don't have a formal stand, simply being there, wearing your brand, and talking to other local business owners who are out with their families can lead to "accidental" business that is often the most genuine. It positions you as a community-minded firm. At Harrison's, we love a good community event: just look at our involvement in things like the Biggleswade Duck Race.

The "Accountant's Guide" to Summer Networking

While we want you to get out there and enjoy these events, we wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't mention the financial side of things. Networking is a business activity, and that means there are tax implications you should keep in mind.

Can you claim the cost of the event?

Generally, the cost of attending a networking event (the ticket price or the "meeting fee") is a tax-deductible business expense, provided the primary purpose is to generate more business or promote your brand.

However, "Business Entertaining" is a different kettle of fish. If you are buying tickets for clients to join you at the SME Awards, those specific costs are generally not tax-deductible for Corporation Tax purposes. But if you are taking your employees as a reward, that can often be claimed as a staff subsistence or annual function expense (within certain limits).

What about the "Black Tie" suit?

We get asked this a lot around June! Unfortunately, HMRC is quite strict here. You generally cannot claim the cost of a tuxedo or an evening dress as a business expense, even if you only bought it for the SME Awards. HMRC argues that the clothing has a "dual purpose" (it keeps you warm and covered, as well as looking smart), so it’s usually a personal cost.

Travel and Subsistence

Don't forget to keep your receipts for travel to and from these events. Whether it's a train to Bedford or mileage in the car, these are legitimate business expenses. If you’re unsure how to record these properly, feel free to check out our about page to see how we help clients stay on top of their bookkeeping.

How to Make the Most of Summer Networking

Attending the event is only half the battle. To see a real return on your time (and the ticket price), you need a plan:

  1. Set a Goal: Don't just go to "network." Go with a goal to meet three new people or find one person who could be a strategic partner.
  2. Follow Up Fast: The "summer slide" is real. If you meet someone great at a Cappuccino Connections event in July, don't wait until September to email them. Send a quick LinkedIn request or email the next day while the conversation is fresh.
  3. Be Interested, Not Just Interesting: Ask people about their summer plans and their business challenges. The best networkers are the best listeners.
  4. Update Your Own Info: Before you head out, make sure your own website and contact details are up to date. If someone looks you up after a meeting, you want them to see a professional, active business. You can see how we keep our community updated on our news page.
